Unemployment Can Be an Opportunity to Volunteer

Successful entrepreneur Becky Catino launched her latest venture, the mobile application GigSmart, in early 2016. Becky Catino and her team designed GigSmart in part to address the problems faced by nonprofits during the volunteer recruitment process.

Studies have shown that the most dedicated volunteers are unemployed. This is especially true for the recently unemployed, who look to volunteer opportunities as a way to build skills and get references for their resume. However, not many people are directly informed about volunteer opportunities, and the likelihood of volunteering declines as the time spent unemployed grows.

Nonprofits, charity events, and organizations that depend heavily on volunteers can benefit greatly from appealing to people who have recently left the job market. These individuals have more time to give and, through volunteering, are able to maintain a daily routine. Organizations can make volunteering more accessible by offering specific volunteer positions that range from single-day opportunities to those with full-time responsibilities.

With GigSmart, organizations can advertise their volunteer positions directly to people looking for meaningful work.
