How Work Opportunities Benefit At-Risk Youth

Experienced Denver-based business leader Becky Catino has led several companies in diverse industries, including investment and finance. With her latest venture, GigSmart, Becky Catino provides an effective medium for “gig” workers and organizations seeking such workers to connect. On a community level, Becky Catino has a personal interest in improving employment opportunities for at-risk youth.

While U.S. teen employment rates are low across the board, disenfranchised youth from low-income, high-crime areas face even more difficulties finding work. Since early meaningful work experiences help young people develop the skills desired by future employers and improve their economic prospects, youth employment programs are an effective strategy for helping at-risk youth break the cycle of poverty.

To increase access to work opportunities, private companies have forged partnerships with public programs to launch youth summer work programs. These have been linked to several positive short- and long-term outcomes, including increased interest in entering higher education, improved job readiness, and lower rates of involvement in the criminal justice system.

Participants also have the chance to develop valuable life skills like money and time management as well as develop business networks that can help them access lucrative work opportunities in the future.
